The False Theft Accusation

Julian: Call security right now! Don't let that girl leave the estate grounds!

Victoria: Julian, my lip is bleeding! Look at what that filthy maid did to me!

Julian: I'm going to have her thrown in prison for the rest of her life!

Julian reached into his suit jacket, pulling out his smartphone with shaking fingers as Victoria struggled up from the hardwood floor.

Victoria: She took my fifty-thousand-dollar diamond bracelet, Julian! I saw her holding it near the foyer!

Julian: Did you actually see her put it in her pocket, Mother?

Victoria: Of course she put it in her pocket! Why else would a poor maid be standing near my jewelry box?!

Julian: That ungrateful little brat. We gave her a job out of pity after her mother died!

Victoria: She's just like her mother. Arrogant, secretive, and full of foolish pride.

Julian paced back and forth across the grand hall, his hand still clutching his red, swollen cheek where Clara had hit him.

Julian: My face is burning. A servant actually laid her hands on me in my own mansion!

Victoria: When the police get here, tell them she assaulted us both and stole the estate jewels!

Julian: Don't worry, Mother. The sheriff owes our family a lot of favors. She won't last an hour on the street.

The heavy double doors at the front of the mansion suddenly opened again, but it wasn't the local police. Clara walked back inside, completely unbothered, accompanied by an older man in a charcoal suit holding a leather briefcase.

Julian: You came back?! Are you insane?!

Victoria: Look at her, Julian! She brought some fake lawyer to scare us!

Clara: I didn't leave, Julian. I just went to the driveway to meet my attorney, Mr. Harrison.

Julian: Your attorney?! You're a maid who earns twenty dollars an hour!

Mr. Harrison: I suggest you watch your tongue, Mr. Vance. You are speaking to the sole owner of this property.

Victoria let out a shrill, hysterical laugh, clutching her red silk dress as she stepped toward Mr. Harrison.

Victoria: Sole owner?! This mansion has belonged to the Vance family for thirty years!

Mr. Harrison: It belonged to Arthur Hayes, Mrs. Vance. And Clara is Arthur Hayes's only living daughter.

Julian's eyes widened in confusion as he looked back and forth between Clara and the old lawyer.

Julian: Arthur Hayes? The man who built the regional electric grid?

Clara: My father built this entire estate, Julian. Your father was just his business manager.

Victoria: That's a lie! Richard owned sixty percent of the corporate shares!

Clara: Richard managed those shares in trust for me while I was away at university. And he hid my identity so you could treat me like dirt.

Julian took a slow step backward, his face turning pale under the bright chandeliers.

Julian: Wait... your name isn't Clara Smith?

Clara: My name is Clara Hayes. And you're standing in my house.
