Judge Miller: In light of the overwhelming physical evidence, the daily prescription logs, and the full sworn confession of Dr. Arthur Harrison, this court finds Victoria Vance guilty of attempted murder, felony child abuse, and corporate fraud.
The judge brought his heavy wooden gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack that filled the packed courtroom.
Judge Miller: Victoria Vance is hereby sentenced to twenty-five years in state prison without the possibility of parole. Dr. Arthur Harrison is sentenced to fifteen years for medical malpractice and conspiracy.
The audience in the courtroom erupted into loud applause as Victoria was led away in orange prison scrubs, her head bowed in total disgrace.
Richard sat at the front table, holding Lily on his lap while Leo and his uncle Thomas sat right next to them.
Lily: Is she ever coming back, Daddy?
Richard: No, sweetheart. She's gone forever. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again.
Thomas: Mr. Vance, I still don't know how to thank you for everything you've done for us. Giving me the manager position at the downtown bakery has changed our lives.
Richard: Thomas, you don't need to thank me. Your nephew saved my daughter's life and exposed the dark secret that was destroying my home.
Leo: I'm just glad Lily can run around in the garden now.
Richard: Leo, I want to ask you and your uncle something very important.
Thomas: What is it, Mr. Vance?
Richard: My mansion has twelve empty bedrooms. Lily and I have been very lonely for a long time. I want you two to move into the estate permanently.
Leo: Move into the mansion?
Richard: Yes. I want to pay for Leo to attend the best private school in the state, and I want him to have every opportunity in the world to develop his incredible gift.
Lily: Please say yes, Leo! We can play in the big garden every single day after school!
Thomas looked at his young nephew, tears of relief and joy filling his eyes as he nodded his head.
Thomas: We would be honored, Mr. Vance. Truly honored.
Leo: Does this mean I get to eat the chef's special chocolate cake every day?
Richard: As much chocolate cake as you can handle, Leo!
They all laughed together as they walked out of the heavy courthouse doors, stepping into the warm, bright sunshine of a beautiful new beginning.
